Definition of Analgesic:

Anodynes and Analgesics (Gr. not pain, without pain, cures pain) are sedative nervines which relieve pain by either depressing sensory centers or impairing nerve-fiber conductivity: opium, morphine, belladonna, hyoscyamus, stramonium, coca, cocaine, hop, antipyrine, acetanilid, acetphenetidin [Culbreth1927, p 40-41].

A remedy that reduces pain and irritation. Pain relieving. (Analagous to anodyne when applied topically.) [Sanchez BOTM680].

I am not clear on the difference between an analgesic and an anodyne [ORWJr].
